Thank you for visiting the Dorcheat Historical Association and Museum Blog. The Dorcheat Historical Museum opened June 10th, 2008. Our hours are, Tuesday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., closed for lunch from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., open again from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. - noon and also by appointment for special showings and meetings. The Dorcheat Historical Association and Museum was honored with some of Louisiana's state representatives. The Office of the Louisiana Secretary of State, State Representative Jean Doerge, and the Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau had a special press conference at the Germantown Colony & Museum on Germantown Road in Minden. This event was held with distinguished members of the We

bster Parish Police Jury, the Germantown Colony Commission and Parish Historian John Agan. The excitement was generated by the State of Louisiana taking over the Germantown Colony as a state site. This will help protect and preserve this valuable piece of local and state history. A reception followed the press conference at Christopher's in downtown Minden. After the well attended reception. Secretary of State; Jay Dardenne along with assistant; Cathy Berry as well as Louisiana State Representative; Jean Doerge, Webster Parish Tourism Director; Lynn Dorsey and members of the WPCVB and other distinguished guest toured the new museum t

o see the tremendous amount of progress that has been made in one year's time.

"Taste Of Yesterday III" Home Plate

The Dorcheat Historical Association and Museum, Inc.’s third cookbook “Home Plate” is here! Museum director, Schelley Brown explained, “These cookbooks have really taken on a life of their own! Our first cookbook in 2007 “A Taste Of Yesterday” sold 500 copies in 10 days. We now have less than 100 of our first and second book! The 1st book tells the early history of Webster Parish and the 2nd book in 2008 was a wonderful addition with cover art by Folk Artist Cora Lou Robinson. This book “Taste Of Class” was an even bigger success, telling the history of early education in our parish and including nostalgic photos from 1920s-1960s. The museum has shipped these books out all over the country. Brown commented, “Several famous people have even received them as Christmas gifts! People have now come to expect a new book from the museum every year. We wanted to tell the history as well as have nice cookbooks for people to collect.”
The all new book is about the history of Sports and Recreation in Webster Parish. This book is sure to hit a homerun for the museum as a fundraiser. This beautiful book has cover art by Folk Artist Cora Lou Robinson as well as wonderful Webster Parish sports history facts and lots of wonderful historic photos.
When you think of your teen years you think about baseball, football, basketball, track, tennis matches, golf tournaments and swim meets. Memories of hot dogs from concession stands, tailgate parties, pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinners and cakewalk fundraisers. All of this cooking was done in support of our high school sports teams. These are historic moments for us because many of these sports memories will last a lifetime. We will relive those games over and over again at reunions, with friends and family, with our children and grandchildren.
Southern cooking and sports go hand in hand. It is our way of showing support for our team and brings together our friends to celebrate the thrill of victories and the agony of defeats. This book will share bits of sports history from citizens of our parish--past and present. Many of our great high school athletes went on to professional careers. Webster Parish has seen many great sports figures develop from our area schools. It is with this knowledge that this book has been created. We want to remember all of our athletes as being a part of the team and also being a part of our lives. Remember, it wasn’t about if you won or lost, it was how you played the game. Sometimes it was just the game that made the difference, not who won that we remember. It is with this in mind that 400 all new recipes were submitted.

The all new Taste of Yesterday II “A Taste Of Class” Cookbook is here!
The first printing of the all new Dorcheat Historical Association Museum cookbook “A Taste of Class” has arrived! This book is graced with a full color cover with art by Folk Artist Cora Lou Robinson. Mrs. Robinson’s Minden High School 1950s painting gives this book special meaning to many in our area. The back cover features a bio and picture of the artist as well. This unique cookbook is filled with 400 recipes submitted by past Webster Parish high school students from many of our different schools. Each recipe has the name of the contributor with his or her class and school listed plus many have short bios about that person. Webster parish historian John Agan supplied the history of early education of our parish that you will find in the front of the book. The Bob Grambling Collection 1940s-1960s photos are woven in as well as many photos and memories from other schools throughout the parish. These wonderful historical pictures from 1900s – 1950s give this book that little bit of something extra. It isn’t just a cookbook it is a piece of history. Museum director, Schelley Brown stated, “Our last book was a huge success and the new book will be even more so”. We ordered 1000 books and they are selling out fast! Last year we sold 500 in 10 days of our first book and then had to wait for weeks to get more in. We didn’t want that to happen this year. This book is a wonderful addition to anyone’s cookbook collection and the perfect gift for Christmas!”
The book is a fundraising project that has been in the works for almost a year. The cost of the book is $20.00 and you can add an extra $5.00 for shipping if you need to have one sent as a gift. The funds from the cookbook will benefit the Children’s Learning Center project for the Dorcheat Museum. The all new museum opened in June of this year with much success and even more compliments and rave reviews. The monthly “Nights for the Museum” which are held at Christopher’s on Main Street in Minden are becoming the must do function for the 2nd Monday night of every month. Cora Lou Brown Robinson and Hunter’s Playhouse
Known to most simply as “Cora Lou", this Minden native and resident is recognized for not only her talents as a professional folk artist but also as a teacher, wife, mother, grandmother and true product of a deep -rooted Minden family. Born in 1935 to Ed and Celeste Brown, Cora Lou has two siblings--one brother, Ed Brown and one sister, Mary Celeste Powers. Cora Lou is married to Ronald Robinson. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Her childhood was what she calls “picture perfect.". She played from morning ’til night with the neighborhood children. Their lives followed a pattern. During the week they went to school, and each Saturday morning they listened to “Let’s Pretend” on the radio and that afternoon would walk to the “picture show” and then walk safely home. Each Sunday they went to Sunday school and then to church. She remembers the thrill of chasing lightning bugs at dusk while all the neighborhood parents sat outside and visited on their front porch. It was a simpler time in Minden, Louisiana, and for many of the people that grew up here.
Her teenage years were wonderful in part due to the generosity of the Hunter family. The Hunter family has owned the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Minden since 1901. Back in the 1940s the Hunters became the recreation hub for all of Minden and the surrounding area. Everyone swam in their pool, played in their playground, danced in their playhouse, and watched countless ballgames in their park. No other town has ever seen the likes of the Hunter family in Cora Lou’s eyes. The 1940s, 50s and early 60s were a special time in Minden, Louisiana because of the generosity of Gladys and Larry Hunter. Cora Lou’s love of the special times and memories of the 1950s and Hunter’s Playhouse is depicted in one of her first paintings of a dance at the Playhouse.
Cora Lou Brown Robinson says her paintings are about “God and Country, Family, and Friends.” Many of her ideas for her paintings come from her childhood and all come from her heart. Her paintings have been featured all across the United States and no one appreciates her more than her hometown and what she does for them by creating their memories on canvas.

When you think of the history of an area many times you think about your grandparents or great grandparents. Memories of meals shared at holidays or Sunday afternoons. These are historic moments for us because many of these memories are what we carry forward in life.
Southern cooking is comfort food. It is our way of showing love; we deliver food to our neighbors in times of joy and sorrow. This book shares bits of love from citizens past and present of our area. Without all the wonderful recipes and ads this book would not have been possible.
I would like to recognize a few people: Mrs. Waynette Farrington Sharon, for her diligence and time in editing this cookbook. Without Mrs. Sharon’s generosity this project could not have been accomplished in such a professional and timely manner. Mrs. Jackie Lewis for design and layout, her talents made this book not only a cookbook but a small piece of history. Mr. John Agan along with his mother Juanita and Mr. Joe Hinton for their extensive knowledge and research of Webster Parish, without them much of our history would be lost.
Many of our cultural and educational institutions thrived, long before our neighbor, Shreveport. More significant was the work ethic and the lifestyle brought to this area by the hardy pioneer settlers. Many came across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi after the Great Indian Removal. Others came as immigrants from foreign lands. All of these people were seeking the chance to create new lives and mold a culture and tradition that would survive and serve their descendants well.

The Taste Of Yesterday Cookbook

Museum director, Schelley Brown stated, “We sold all 500 books in 10 days before Christmas. We reordered 700 books and they are selling out fast! This is a wonderful addition to anyone’s cookbook collection this year.
The book is a fundraising project that has been in the works for six months. The cost of the book is $15.00 and you can add an extra $5.00 for shipping if you need to have one sent as a gift. The funds from the cookbook will benefit the roof project for the Dorcheat Museum. The all new museum will open March 1st, 2008 and will be a huge asset to our parish. A preview party was held on November 13, 2007 with over 200 attending. “This is a 30 year project that is finally coming true for all of us.” stated Ms. Brown. “We recently were awarded a $5,000 Main Street Grant for roof issues but the entire roof will cost $20,000 so we need to raise $15,000 soon!” This cookbook will get the museum halfway there if all the books sell soon.
